Tree Cabling and Bracing in Framingham

Steel support cable installed between two leaders of a mature oak in Framingham

Some trees are worth saving even with a weak spot. A big old oak with two trunks growing from the same point, or a maple with a long limb stretching over the yard, can stand for decades longer with some help. Cabling and bracing give that help.

What cabling does

A cable is a steel line installed high in the tree, between two leaders or between a heavy limb and the main trunk. It does not hold the tree rigid. It limits how far the parts can move apart in wind or under snow, so the weak union does not split. Cables go in about two thirds of the way up the parts they support, where they do the most good.

Bracing uses threaded steel rods through the trunk, usually lower down, at a crack or a tight fork. Rods hold the wood together. Many trees get both: rods at the split and a cable above it.

Trees that are good candidates

  • Two or more trunks from one point with a tight V and bark pinched between them
  • A long, heavy limb over a house, patio or play area that you want to keep
  • A tree that lost part of its crown in a storm but is otherwise healthy
  • A specimen tree with a crack that has not opened all the way

Cabling is not a fix for a tree with heavy decay or a dying crown. If the tree is too far gone, we will tell you, and we will not sell you hardware it does not need.

Older trees in Framingham

Framingham has a lot of big trees that predate the houses around them. In Framingham Centre and along the older streets near the Common, you find oaks and maples well over a century old. Many of those have the kind of co-dominant trunks that split in a nor'easter. We do a lot of cabling on trees like these, often paired with a light pruning to reduce weight at the ends of the limbs.

Upkeep

Cables and rods need a check every few years. Trees grow, and hardware can loosen or get too tight. We record what we installed and where, and we can come back for an inspection on a schedule that makes sense for the tree. Call us if you have an older cable in a tree and do not know when it was last looked at.

Common Questions

Does cabling hurt the tree?
Installing hardware does make small wounds, but trees seal around them. A properly installed system does far less harm than a split trunk.
How long do tree cables last?
Steel cable systems can last many years with periodic inspections. We recommend a check every two to five years depending on the tree and how fast it is growing.
Can a cabled tree still fall?
Cabling lowers the risk of a split at the union it supports. It does not make a tree storm-proof. That is why we combine it with pruning and check the whole tree.
